Memorial Grove Restoration

Tax deductible
Memorial Grove is a living tribute to the service members of Worcester, Massachusetts who gave their lives for the United States in World War I. The grove was dedicated in 1928 by American Legion Post 5, whose members planted more than 350 trees (one for each decedent), built an 800 foot long stone walkway, and constructed a walled ceremonial circle within the magnificent landscape of Green Hill Park. To each tree was attached a plaque bearing the name of the honored dead .

As the years passed, however, WWI veterans died off, and American Legion Post 5 closed. Soon the Grove suffered from misuse and neglect.

The Green Hill Park Coalition Incorporated (a 501 c 3 non-profit citizens group) is now working with the City of Worcester to restore the Grove to its original condition. Our goals are to replant several hundred trees and shrubs, to repair the flagstone walk, to repair the stone wall, to restore the commenorative plaques, and most importantly we want to install an Honor Roll listing the names of each service member who died in the war.

The variety of their services is remarkable. 314 were members of the Army, 27 were Navy, 13 were Marines, 21 served with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces, and 4 served with the British Expeditionary Forces. Of those who died, 65 were foreign-born immigrants, and 82 were first generation children born of immigrant parents. The dead included 256 Privates, 14 Seamen, 43 Corporals, 1 Warrant Officer, 22 Sergeants, 25 Lieutenants, 5 Captains, 2 Majors, 1 Colonel and 2 Nurses.

The 100th anniversary of the end of WWI will occur on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 2018. By then we hope to have restored the Grove but  there is much to do. So far we have cleared 4 acres of brush and unwanted trees and have replanted 38 of the missing trees. We are simultaneously working on fundraising for the Honor Roll plaque and replanting the missing trees.

Please help us to honor the hundreds who died to protect our freedoms.
