Safe Housing For A Trans Woman Who Lost Apartment

Donation protected

MOST RECENT UPDATE: I have not heard back from the state of California about rental assistance. When I received assistance in Maryland I did not have to wait this long. I’m starting to get extremely concerned about the silence and I’m worried if I will even be approved at all. I moved across the country in the summer of 2020 and struggled to find a place to live for 8 months which hurt me financially and my progress moving forward. I’m urging everyone who is willing and able to donate to my campaign to help me stay safely housed. Your support really matters and it hurts to see donors and my followers ignoring this situation. Black transgender people rarely get the support they need in difficult times. I’m doing everything that I can as I’m working towards independence.

PAST UPDATES: I created this fundraiser for housing funds when I experience homelessness after moving across country to Los Angeles to pursue my medical Transition when I lost my ID in my wallet and bank card. I have currently been battling housing and instability ever since December of that year. I started apartment hunting in March after recovering from Trumatic experiences battling homelessness and being in between unsafe living situations. My progress was thrown off of my apartment hunt after I was violently assaulted by a transphobic male at a 711 in March of 2021. I found a great location in a safe neighborhood where I can focus on medically transitioning and maintaining mental and housing stability while growing my business I’ve been developing for over a year. I was offered support from the Los Angeles LGBT center for my security deposit however they decided to withdraw support at the last minute which is leaving me a little time to come up with $6,700 in order to move in.

I’m a 22 year old transgender woman working as an artist on a music project featuring some of the top producers in Los Angeles, California. I am also credited as a footage contributor for organizations such as the University of British Columbia, Viceland, NBC4, and MAPS.

ABOUT: Greetings everyone, my name is Debbie and I created this Emergency Rent Fund in December 2020 after losing my wallet containing my ID and credit card in it after moving across country to Los Angeles Los Angeles to pursue my medical transition and further my career In that time at the end of the year, I endured some of the most horrific things imaginable. I was in-between unsafe living situations, I experienced extreme transphobia, I was assaulted two times by cis males, and I even had to walk and sleep on the streets for a few nights while I connected with resources and figured out how to reobtain my documentation. Nowhere in Los Angeles would let me rent without this documentation. I had no family or friends to turn to and the resources provided to me by the state and other organizations were not helpful at all. These were some of the most traumatic experiences of my life considering I had just begun taking HRT injections and I’m still healing from these experiences.

Since arriving here in Los Angeles, I connected with UCLA Health in Santa Monica and begun hormone therapy and seeing a speech therapist. I also was able to make connections in the industry after only being here 60 days that really help me to develop the ideas that I had brought here from the West Coast. The campaign is designed to help me regain much-needed safety and stability. With your help, I was able to find a much better living situation and I am asking for support to sustain that while I gain my independence here in Los Angeles. The funds raise for this campaign will go directly to housing. No one should have to horrors like I did and I never want this to happen again.

Since this happened I’ve been having nightmares about my experiences and I fear I may have developed post traumatic stress from the experiences I have endured and the current state of California during COVID-19. No one from the organization I visited issued me any sort of apology for putting me in harms way. I also reached out to similar organizers over those months and receive no support for them or any kind of visibility at all. Leaving me in a tough position where if I don’t speak up for myself and my rights then I will struggle to survive.

I’ve been struggling to fund a space I can truly be myself in for a long time.
