Dear Friends, Family, and Strangers:
I am 23 years old and I have just been diagnosed with Papillary Cancer in my thyroid and lymph nodes.
I will undergo two separate surgeries, the first one on July 6th and the second on August 17th, to remove my thyroid and all of my lymph nodes. This will leave me with muscles and nerves in my neck and no fatty tissues. A few months after my surgeries, I will start on a Radioactive Iodine treatment that will kill any remaining cancerous tissues. After that, I will have my thyroid levels monitored regularly and be on medication.
Fortunately, this type of cancer is highly treatable AND I have Dr. Shindo, a Thyroid Specialist at OHSU, as my doctor. I will be in great hands.
I have a nodule on my thyroid that is completely calcified and was discovered during my regular check-up about a month ago. My doctor then ordered an ultrasound to be done on my thyroid, which showed calcium deposits all over my thyroid and lymph nodes. This arose extra suspicion and a biopsy, cat scan, and blood work were ordered next. All of which confirmed exactly what the ultrasound showed, cancer.
After the initial shock of the news had passed, I realized how long of a road this will be, and I am only at the beginning. I can use as many prayers, positive thoughts, and good vibrations as I can get. Unfortunately, on top of the emotional toll, it will also be a huge financial burden for me and my family.
It pains me to have to reach out for help, especially financial help, but due to the frequency of my appointments, surgeries, checkups, and recovery time, (starting June 24th and going into December/next year) it is impossible for me to work. I will have rent to pay, other monthly bills and payments, and a plethora of medical bills from this whole process.
Any and all help for the upcoming months is appreciated more than words could ever properly describe.
I am keeping a hopeful and positive outlook and I look forward to defeating this obstacle. A great big thank you and lots of love to you all!
