Curls for Cancer

"When someone has cancer, the whole family and everyone who loves them does, too."
             -Terri Clark

I think it's easy to say that cancer has affected each one of us. Likely, immediately you think of someone who is currently battling cancer, or tragically you're flooded with memories of a loved one who did everything in their power to fight it.

Here are two people that I want you to meet:

Jeffery is a toddler who was diagnosed with leukemia in March of this year. Every week he is driven by his dad to Alberta Children’s Hospital for surgical and chemotherapy treatments. The family has opted to make the long commute from their home which is 220 km outside of Calgary, a few times a week for tests, surgeries and chemo. Jeffery’s mom is expecting her fifth child very soon and staying in hospital was beginning to affect Jeffery’s development negatively.

Amber is a woman who co-workers of mine describe as loving, active, intellectual and kind beyond measure. She worked as a Registered Nurse in the OR, ICU, and labour & delivery. She is a devoted wife to husband, Kevin and mother to two beautiful teenaged boys. In January 2016, she got news that she had Stage 4 Liver Cancer and is currently receiving palliative chemotherapy.

So, you might wonder what these two individuals have in common, right? Aside from the obvious, these people are going through a struggle that strains them and their families physically, emotionally, and financially.

There are a lot of fundraisers raising money for research endorsed by organizations, but this one isn’t that. This one is meant to help ease some of the burden from direct medical expenses incurred by these families. This fundRAZOR (do yah like the pun ;P?) will entail taking a razor to my scalp. That’s right, I’m shaving my curls off in support of these warriors battling cancer! I am in between knee surgeries so marathons and walks aren’t up my alley right now but I can contribute in other ways and this is how I’m reaching out to you!

Thank you so much for your support and donations, and the shaving will be recorded on Facebook Livefeed for your viewing.

Anything you contribute will be extremely appreciated by the individuals and their families and I do believe that, “there can be this genuine, selfless connection between people…even strangers”. With that said, I don’t know these individuals personally but I don’t think we need to know people personally to help them, to show them we care, and to reinforce that they are loved!

I also don't want anyone to get the impression that fundraising for research isn't important because it is!

Sincerely,

Curls that Care
