For Rugby

This is our amazing dog Rugby.  He is more than a pet, he is family.  Rugby is known for his loveable heart and puppy smile.  When visitors come to our home, he will greet you with one of his favorite toys to play with.  Some of his favorite things to do are, take walks with his mommy and daddy, cuddling, play tug of war, play hide and seek with the cat and enjoying treats.  He loves looking out the window and protecting the neighborhood from squirrels.  On Thursday May 26th in the early morning, Rugby suffered from a serious injury to his back while going down the deck stairs to the backyard.  We found Rugby dragging his right hind leg and crying out in pain.  We immediately took him to the emergency animal hospital. We consulted with different doctors including a surgeon and neurologist.  It was determined that Rugby would need an immediate MRI and based on those results he would be taken for surgery.

The MRI results determined that Rugby has a herniated and torn disk in his spinal cord.  Thankfully, at this time, surgery would not be needed.  Rugby ended up staying two nights in the hospital to be monitored and given medications.  On Saturday May 28th, he was deemed strong enough to go home and must remain quiet and comfortable for the next four weeks.

Rugby is slowly recuperating at home, but this hasn’t been without struggle. At this time, Rugby cannot walk independently and needs the guidance of a sling to get around.  His right hind paw has curled under to help him support his lame leg, but this has caused his poor little foot to get cut up.  Rugby remains on medication to help with recovery of the injury and pain management.

We will be returning to the animal hospital in four weeks for a follow up appointment.  The vet expects that Rugby will have use of his leg within 4-6 weeks.  We are optimistic that this is accurate and that Rugby will not need any additional medical support for this injury.  We decided to set up this page as many people have asked how they can help.  Rugby’s vet bill is in the thousands and this has been a huge financial hit to our family.  Any help that can be given would be sincerely appreciated.  Please keep Rugby in your prayers for a full and speedy recovery.
