Sarah Gascon Sportwalk of Fame Honor
USA Team Handball Women’s National Team Captain Sarah Gascon has been selected to be honored with a plaque on the famed San Pedro Sportswalk of Fame. The Sportswalk to the Waterfront, similar in nature to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is located in the San Pedro district of Los Angeles. The induction ceremony, which honors great athletes for excellence on and off the field, includes the installation of a bronze plaque on the sidewalk of San Pedro’s Historic Downtown Waterfront District. Each plaque includes the name of the athlete being honored and a symbol that represents the sport in which he or she played.
Gascon, is also a veteran of the USA Baseball Woman’s National Team, being selected as the starting centerfielder for the first ever national team in 2004. Gascon had the distinction of driving in the game-winning run in the first ever Gold Medal Game of the World Cup of Women’s Baseball, held in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, that summer. As a teenager, she also led a group of local girls, the Harbor Hawks softball travel ball team, to a national championship.
Gascon is a graduate of San Pedro’s Mary Star of the Sea High School. Gascon was literally all-everything in Softball, Basketball, and Volleyball, in each of her four years. Gascon is a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University, where she was a three-sport Division 1 athlete, lettering in Volleyball, Softball, and Soccer. Gascon was a four-year Southland Conference all-conference softball player, and two-time all-conference first team volleyball player. Gascon shattered the NCAA Defensive Digs game and year average records in consecutive years. Gascon was selected to the University’s Hall of Fame, and was named to two Southland Conference All-Half Century Teams, in both Softball and Volleyball.
The Sportswalk mission is to: 1) Promote and vitalize sports through education in the Harbor Area community; 2) Provide a scholarship program for the youth of the Harbor Area community; and 3) Work toward the continuation and expansion of the Sportswalk concept. Sportswalk honors a mix of local and national athletes for their achievement in sports. In addition, Sportswalk provides two annual awards that recognizes athletes for their contribution from the sidelines. The Trani Award is given each year to someone that has contributed to local athletics, especially for youth. The Tillman Award, named after 2004 Sportswalk honoree, Pat Tillman, is provided to athletes that courageously served our nation during war.
Over many years some of the most famous names in Sports history have been placed in Bronze on the Sportswalk of Fame. Basketball legends like Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, and John Wooden, as well as Lisa Leslie, Ann Meyers, and Cheryl Miller are honored with plaques. Also honored are Baseball greats Jackie Robinson, Don Drysdale, Roy Campanella, and Tommy Lasorda. Legendary Olympians like Jim Thorpe, Rafer Johnson, Jackie Joiner-Kersee and Evelyn Ashford are among the track and field stars honored. Football legends honored include Heisman Trophy winners Mike Garrett and Gary Beban. No visit to the Los Angeles Harbor area is complete without visiting the Sportswalk of Fame, watching the port’s elaborate dancing water fountains, marveling at the mighty World War II Battleship USS Iowa, and walking the Port O’ Call Village and marina areas.
The Gascon family has launched a fundraising campaign to address the $5,000 costs of the beautiful bronze plaque, cement, and labor to complete and maintain the sidewalk display. Sarah and family are most appreciative of this honor and grateful to you for your financial support to make this honor possible.
