Necco of Huntington is fortunate to have a vast number of foster parents who give 100% every single day. But giving your foster child part of your own liver so he will live? That is the kind of sacrifice we have not experienced until now.
The doctors told the child’s foster family that their foster son has Biliary Atresia. It is the formal medical term for “without a liver transplant, the child will not live”. Those were the only words our foster mother needed to hear. She asked to be tested as a donor, and was a perfect match.
In his short life, this baby has been in and out of the hospital, flown to a children’s hospital out of state several times, has been on the liver transplant list and currently takes 8 different medications a day. This week, this Necco foster mother and her very loved foster son will undergo the transplant surgery. Our foster mother will live out of state for the summer while he and her foster son recovers. But back at home, the child’s brother and other foster mother must wait patiently, as only half of a family, until they are able to return home.
Because this family is selfless, they have not asked for anything. They do not see that what they are doing is over-the-top generous. They simply see it as the right thing to do to help a child.
It has created a financial burden and strain on the family, but they don’t talk about that. It has caused longing and heartache to be apart, but they don’t talk about that. They simply talk about all they will do as a family, when they are healed and reunited.
