Our Mom's battle

Donation protected

Hi friends.

My mom was diagnosed with uterine cancer in August of 2011.  She went through an emergency hysterectomy and 6 months of chemotherapy.  In April of 2012, she had a CT scan to clear her from the uterine cancer.  However, it wasn't good news.  The CT  showed that she now had a rectal tumor.  Doctors did a biopsy of the rectal tumor, and determined that it was not the same type of cancer as the uterine tumor, but in fact a completely different type of cancerous growth - a second cancer.  She had to have an emergency ostomy because the tumor was blocking her rectum and the tumor had grown too large to allow anything to pass through.  She then had to undergo additional chemotherapy, plus radiation treatments to try and shrink the tumor enough to remove it.  The radiation did shrink the tumor, and the surgeon was able to remove it, but unable to reconnect everything because she did not have enough to work with, so my mom has a permanent ostomy.  She also had to undergo a surgery to remove her rectum and anus to prevent a recurrence of this cancer.  She had a scan in January of this year, and as of this date, she is cancer free.  :)

Her financial need stems from the fact that she is too young for Medicare, and did not have insurance.  My dad had a stroke in 2002 which left him partially paralyzed, and my mom takes care of him, and did not work outside of the home.  She was 62 at the time of her diagnosis - too young for Medicare.  She was on the hospital's financial assistance plan, but they do not cover things like prescriptions and ostomy supplies, which are very, very expensive.  The hospital where she underwent all of her treatments and surgeries is a 2 hour drive from her home, and she had no choice but to go there for treatments because no one else would take her with no insurance.  Even though she was on the hospital's financial plan, she still had to make co-payments to the hospital, which were very costly, not to mention the cost of gasoline to drive 4 hours round trip for treatments.  Because she and my dad are on disability/social security only, they have slowly become unable to pay many of their bills, or to afford necessary medications and supplies.  (My dad takes many medications, and my mom is also diabetic.)

My point is, they just need one thing to go right in their lives.  Since 2002, it has not been a smooth road for my mom and dad.  First, my dad had his stroke in 2002 which rendered him partially paralyzed, then they lost their home and all of their possessions in Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and now my mom's cancer.  I want to help them, but I am not in a position to help them cover all of the bills that they need to pay in order to feel more financially stable.  It is not like my mom or my dad to ever ask for help, so that is why I am doing this for them.  They need help, and I wouldn't ask for help for them if they didn't need it. A little bit will go a long way, and you will be helping 2 of the greatest people that I know.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read.  Your generosity is sincerely appreciated.

God Bless,
Alisa
