Torres family hurricane recovery in Honduras
In the early morning of November 4th, Hurricane Eta made landfall over Nicaragua and Honduras. Most people didn’t hear about this because the election was of primary concern, but, nevertheless, the storm flooded the homes of nearly 400,000 people, my family’s included. The flood water, which reached the roofs of two story houses, finally drained enough for people to return home to the take account of what little the storm hadn’t claimed. Then Hurricane Iota arrived.
It’s been so hard watching my dad cope with the inability to help his parents, son and siblings replace everything they once owned. He is sending every dollar he can to them, but the storm left them with nothing. The appliances were either ripped out or ruined, their clothes and bedding missing or soiled, and their walls and roofs were soaked and stained with mold. There is simply too much to replace. There is too much damage for us to repair on our own.
Right now my family is being hosted by their friends in another city. I’m not sure how long their friends will be able to share a home. my grandparents are in their eighties, so they will not be able to restart on their own once they must leave.
I couldn’t be more grateful for the safety of my family. We waited several days to hear whether they made it out of La Lima. We finally got the call on the fourth night, but there were hundreds of families who were not as fortunate to have received the same news.
The nation as a whole incurred over 10 billion dollars of damage. That is nearly half of its gross domestic product. The people of La Lima and many similar cities are beset with the difficult task to rebuild their homes. Stoves, refrigerators, beds - the storms destroyed what was available for purchase.
We are sending every dollar we can afford to help my family rebuild. Right now with the lack of supply, the essentials are so difficult to afford. Those of you that know me know I never ask a thing from others. Right now my family weds help. The people of Honduras and Central America need help.
