Lexie's Electrolysis Fund

Hi Everyone! Thanks for checking out my page~

My Story
My name is Lexie, and I'm a transwoman from Vancouver, BC.

Right now is a really exciting time for me! I've been on HRT for over a year and a half, having been living as a woman pretty much since I started (I figured I already wasted enough time...), and I'm looking forward to my surgery in the Fall!

I'm very lucky to live in a place like Canada that recognizes dysphoria as a very serious condition, and BC specifically that provides us with medical coverage in the event of medically necessary surgeries. Unfortunately, one of the biggest costs isn't covered, not even by extended coverage plans. That is electrolysis.

Electrolysis is very, very expensive, and after trying for months to save up, I've gotten literally nowhere. Also with my surgery impending, I need to be mindful of where my money goes. Even on medical leave, I'll need some put away to make sure I can pay rent and such. So, I'm here with this crowdfunding campaign and appeal to all of you to lend me a hand. Every little bit helps!

What is Electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the only verified permenant hair removal procedure. While hormones usually take care of the hair on most other areas of the body, facial hair remains pretty well unchanged. Things like waxing, and even professional laser, does not permenantly remove hair. Electrolysis works by cutting cauterizing the hair follicle with an electrical current, cutting off blood flow, and effectively "killing" the follicle, preventing any hair growth beyond a fine fuzz that we all have everywhere. It is very painful, takes many hours (most undergo 100 or more before all the facial hair is completely treated).

Where I'm At
Earlier this year, with help from family, I was able to purchase 20 hours, and used up 14 of those, so I still have 6 left, and I have until January before they expire. The technician I go to here in Vancouver is wonderful. She's certified, has over 35 years of experience, very trans* friendly, and offers discounts by buying blocks of time. I'm looking at needing another 20 to 30, doing 4 to 6 hours a week, to take care of the major work still needing to be done. After that, it's mostly just maintenance over an extended period of time, probably another 20 to 30, at least. Comparitively, that's not very much. To get done in under 100 hours is rare, so I'm lucky to have someone as skilled as her!

Cost and Timeline
Right now I'm focusing on just taking care of the major work, with a goal of raising enough money to buy 30 hours, and use those up by the time I go for my surgery later this year. That will mean I won't have to worry about being away from home, unable to do any sort of hair removal (dysphoria trigger), and can take the time during post-op recovery to let my face heal as well, and without having to worry about doing anything about facial hair (dysphoria trigger... again!).

Typical costs for electrolysis range between 100 and 125+ per hour. However, with the discounts my technician offers, I can buy blocks of ten for 850. That means I need to put together 2550 total over the next three months.

My Contributions
Any and all money I can spare will go to this. I have to prioritize paying for my ticket to Montreal in September or October, then make sure I have some put away to cover any expenses that won't be covered by Employment Insurance. I'm hoping to cover two or three hundred in August, and again in September. I'll be adding those as private donations, so everything I contribute will show up and everyone can see!
