Help for Greg

Donation protected

On January 7, 2013 I took my husband, Greg, to an acute care facility with stomach pains.  The doctor would not touch him and sent him right away to ER.  When we got there we ended up waiting almost 6 hrs. to get into the ER room.  By the time we got in my husband had sepsis and was in septic shock.  The doctors and nurses in the ER were wonderful.  They had my husband in for emergency surgery very quickly.  The doctor told me that he suspected there was infection in his abdomen but he would do an exploratory first to make sure it wasn't something else.  Sure enough there was infection.  He was admitted to ICU shock trauma.  He was there for 3 weeks.  During this time his kidneys and heart shut down and he had a stroke, they had to begin dialysis on him.  He coded 2 or 3 times. I was there for 2 of them and it was the most helpless feeling I'd ever had thinking my husband was dying. They did a local procedure to check his heart and found no blood clots but they did find he had congestive heart failure and his heart was beating slow. Meanwhile, I went on facebook to all my friends and asked them to please pray.  The prayer servants were so faithful.  My children and I would go into his room and he wouldn't know us.  His sister flew out to see him from Florida and he not only didn't know her, but later on said he had no idea she had been there.  For a very long time he was unable to speak. We were there everyday praying over him and just being there for him.  The doctors never expected him to get out of ICU alive.  One day it turned around for him.  He is a living miracle! He sort of woke up and started asking questions.  His short term memory wasn't real and on some things his long term memory faded also.  But, he began to get better.  After 3 weeks he went to intermediate care. At this time his kidney's began to get a bit better.  After a while he was able to start talking a little to us.  They took him off dialysis after about 6 or 7 weeks of having it.  He still was not able to walk by himself or go to the bathroom.  It was now time to move him to the orthopedic wing.  He has now been there a little over a week.  Last Thursday I found out I was suppose to have been finding him a rehab to go to or he would have to go home. We just moved to Redding in August and we have a taxi business.  We haven't been established here long enough to get a dependable clientele.  On October 31, 2012 after 34 years of having insurance we had to drop the coverage we had because we could no longer afford $1600.00/mo.  My husband and I both have pre-existing conditions (diabetes), and though we had tried to find a less expensive insurance we haven't been able to find one we could afford.  We are both 61 years old.  We were still actively trying to find as insurance company when this happened.  We immediately applied for medi-cal.  We have an advocate doing this for us and she is very confident that we will receive it but it hasn't come in yet.  So, rehabs don't want to touch us unless we have cash.  This is way beyond our financial capability.  Because my husband has not worked we also have monthly bills that we are getting behind in. The stress is unbelieveable!  I only want my husband to have the best care, get well and come home.  I am unable to give him 24/7 care.  I am trying to keep the business going.  In order to do that I am in and out of the house all the time.  My daughter is going to school and she is unable to be here all the time.  We need him to go to a rehab so that he can gain some independence like walking, regaining his strength and going to the bathroom by himself unless one of us is not here.  I would appreciate any help we could get.  We have someone who will match up to $6000.00, but we have no one else who has volunteered so the match can't be made.  We have a 9 year old at home and our grandson is also living with us.  I've never had to do anything like this before and I feel uncomfortable doing it.  However, I just want my husband well and I don't know what else to do.  You are the real hero's and we would forever be indebted to you.  Thanks so much.
