The Herbal Acre is the acre of land we (Sarah and Claudia) lease in
upstate NY from our wonderful friend Ethel. Here we grow medicinal
plants for making our herbal products and to
supply the medicine-making workshops we lead.
Above all, we see the Herbal Acre as a gateway to greater community engagement and aim to make our plants useful to people in whatever form they might be required. Implicit in our work is a desire to make the practice of self-healing as accessible as possible to those most in need. With organizing experience that includes a social-justice focus, it is our intention to integrate many forms of community assistance through the work we do on the Acre, be it partnership with local social workers or therapeutic practitioners.
We ultimately see self-healing as a radical act of self-sufficiency, as well as a catalyst for productive forms of collaboration within the community. Funding will go directly to buying medicine-making and growing supplies as well as farm tools and amendments, scholarship funding for our workshop participants and commissioned work from our local and extended creative community. The financial goal includes a very modest income for our first six months, as we hope to concentrate on the goals of our mission without putting our own health and well-being at risk.
