Hi everyone,

This past year has been such a whirlwind with my dad being in and out of the hospital, it’s hard to imagine that this is our REALITY.  Let’s start at the beginning..

March 2015 was when we got the diagnosis of the big ‘C’ word, colorectal to be exact.  At the time of diagnosis, we had thought we caught it early. Dad was able to undergo surgery to remove the tumor. The surgery was supposed to be done with small cameras and tubes, but in the OR the doctors found that the mass was much larger and deeper than they had thought.  Instead of 3 small incisions, they decided to open up his whole belly.  5 agonizing hours later, Dad was out and free of the tumor, with a cool battle scar to prove it.   Oh what a relief..

Recovery was rough, his body needed to adjust after having a chunk of his colon removed.  He was still in pain at times, but for the most part Dad was okay. He travelled all summer for the boys’ baseball, visited me in Seattle, and even did a little snowboarding during our winter vacation in California.

As you all know, Mike is a hard-working man. He’ll always put on a good face to help those in need. He’s what I like to call a manly-man.  If you need something fixed, he’ll fix it. If there’s a bug in your room, he’ll get it.  If you have an attitude problem, he’ll set you straight (this only pertains to me haha).  He put on a brave face for us.

February 2016, less than a year after his first surgery his intense pains were back and unbearable.  It was what we feared most.  Surgery was the next step.  We thought everything was going to be like the first one, but this time was different. The surgeon opened up his abdomen and saw much more than expected.  The tumor had not only grown back in the colon, but it has moved past the intestinal wall.  Doctors thought that resecting the growths would have done more harm than good.   They could do nothing but close him back up.   Coming out of surgery, only to find out that he still had cancer was the most heart breaking news I’ve ever heard.  We had to take a different approach.

April 2016, we must attack from the inside out.  Once Dad was fully healed from his incisions he began his first round of chemo.  He was eating again and moving around more.  There was hope and I couldn’t have been happier for him.  I had just learned about chemo drugs in school so it was great that I got to show off some drug knowledge :)

May 21, 2016, Dad was rushed to the ER with stomach pain and a fever. He had an intestinal rupture.  When this happens, all the contents from the intestinal tract spill out, which can cause serve infection.  He was taken to the ICU and started on strong antibiotics.  It’s been five days now and he’s still unstable with spikes in temperature and fluctuating blood levels.  The hospital is doing the best they can to stabilize his vitals and control the infection.  We are not out of the woods yet.

This has taken both an emotional and financial toll on the family.  It’s been especially hard on my mom to stay on top of the extensive medical bills, while also taking care of everyone at home.  All the money raised here will go towards Dad’s medical expenses.  We are grateful for all of the help we can get and hopefully money will be one less thing we have to worry about.

We are doing our best to support each other through such a distressing time and will continue to FIGHT ON.  Your donations and kind words will be much appreciated!!! Thanks for taking the time to read this; I will try to keep you updated.

On behalf of Mike Oasay and the rest of the family, THANK YOU!!!
