I will never forget the smile that cracked from a sunken face, and eyes that glowed through the jaundice, as I walked in the hospital room to share what would be my final words with my Uncle Greg. Before I could say anything, as I swallowed my fear with a dry mouth, he asked, “Caitlin, how are you?” The room was still.
This is my Uncle Greg that we all remember. A gentle, kind, thoughtful man, who puts others happiness before his own.
In October of 2012, Greg was diagnosed with GIST, gastrointestinal stromal tumors, commonly grouped with stomach cancer. Within six weeks from diagnosis, the cancer rapidly spread. Greg passed away on December 5, 2012, leaving behind my cousins Jeffrey and Andrew, who were 9 and 6 at the time.
GIST is an unpredictable, rare cancer, with not much funding behind it for research, treatment, or support.
Together, we can change that.
Please consider donating to my first marathon, as I run 26.2 miles at the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon on June 3rd, to honor Greg and ALL those who have suffered from the effects of cancer.
All proceeds raised will go directly towards Temple Fox Chase Cancer Center in Greg’s name to further research and treatment for GIST.
I encourage you to read the poem written below by Greg’s son, Andrew, at 7 years old.
My favorite dad.
My dad is funny he is almost hilarious. He is the nicest dad. My dad is also a yeller. He is so tall he is the tallest person on the galaxy. My dad is the best hugger. He has all the good faces too. My dad is wild too. He is not fat. My dad is so skinny he is not fat. My dad is ginormous. He is so short. I like when his birth is. My dad loves us. He can stand brightness. He sometimes is boring. Also is sometimes scary. My dad is cool. He is fast. My dad is good at photos. He likes trains. My dad is sometimes crazy. He is also silly. My dad has brown eyes. He has dark skin. My dad goes to work a lot. He does hard work. He works for a company. He always looks out for me I love him so much too. I will always love him forever. If he was alive now he would be 49. He puts a lot of effort into things. I will never forget him. He is the best.
