In the early hours of Thursday, May 19, 2016, quietly and without much fanfare - family, friends and the dog agility community lost Deb Patrick. For many of us, the loss was unexpected and profound.
Within the agility community, Deborah Patrick had been a kind, funny, joyous and friendly competitor, and one who along with her beloved Border Collie "Pray," collected what seemed like an endless amount of impressive wins and titles among some of the country's top competitors. She did it gracefully and quietly; you could have been a beginner; you could have been a world champion - Deb simply wanted to be supportive, friendly, genuine and honest. Having competed in multiple venues with Solomon, Kenai and Pray, she collected friends the way many of us collected miles on our odometers - they were many and they never went away. She volunteered at trials without being asked; she rejoiced in other competitors' successes and it did not matter to Deb if she knew them or not. Her smile and enthusiasm were contagious. And oh, that smile.
When she felt she had met all of her personal goals with "Pray" (Kenai and Solomon had already been retired) Deb decided to leave dog agility and pursue new interests. She was at the top of her game at the time and some felt it was an unusual decision to make, but Deb was committed to follow other paths. No one wanted her to leave. She shared photos she had taken of her friends with them and compiled a video of her friends - not of her - but of her friends she so could remember them. And we all smiled.
Facebook allowed us all to stay in touch - to have Deb experience our agility successes and failures, to share in other aspects of our lives and for us to share in her life experiences as well.
Her last Facebook posts were about her battle with cancer and ones we'll all not forget.
While Deb Patrick was rich with friends and fans, she was not a wealthy person. I put together this GoFundMe page on behalf of everyone who inquired and suggested it - to help with Deb's final expenses, to collect monies to go to The American Cancer Society in her memory and to help a dog rescue organization or shelter (if you have any ideas on which one, please let me know!). I know that we're all still reeling from her sudden loss, but if she ever flashed that big smile your way, or impacted your life please consider donating any amount - small or large. We're all too late to help save Deb's life, but together we can assist in her aftercare, fund the ACS in her memory and help to save dogs' lives. And that would make Deb smile.
