Help Lakota Gardens Grow

Lakota Grows will assist in the elimination of hunger in the Lakota Nation. The Pine Ridge Reservation, in southwest South Dakota, serves as home to an entire Native American population living in conditions equal to the poorest of Third World countries. Extreme poverty and unemployment, and near insurmountable distances to sources of fresh, healthy food have left the Lakota facing daily hunger and severe health conditions. The Pine Ridge residents want to learn, they want to work. They want to continue honoring one of their fundamental values of caring for their children, their elders, their neighbors. We will start with a main community garden. The following season, we will expand to other villages on Pine Ridge. Within three years, we plan to be able to preserve seed from the main gardens and offer them -- free of charge, along with support -- to individual families interested in growing gardens for their own personal use. By teaching hands-on farming skills, we will empower the Lakota people to believe in themselves and to trust that they can provide for their families. It is not a hand out . . . it is a foundational hands up. We are dedicated to teaching the Lakota Nation how to grow food for their families, and hope for their future.
