Cancer: My brother in-law Pete Longoria was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma in his abdomen. He underwent surgery to remove the tumor, which was larger than a football. The tumor had attached itself to the muscles in his back. In order to remove the tumor doctors had to remove the muscles and nerves that operate his left leg. This has left him with permanent damage, limited mobility and frequent nerve pain in his leg. When the tumor was biopsied they discovered dedifferentiated cells which are aggressive cancer cells that are likely to spread rapidly. Due to the aggressiveness of this cancer he has undergone 7 weeks of radiation and he is currently undergoing his 3rd round of chemotherapy. Each round of chemotherapy requires him to be hospitalized for a week while it is being administered. He also has to attend physical therapy weekly to try to regain as much function to his left leg as possible. Pete has been on medical leave from work since the surgery in September. While he is eager to return to work, he will not be ready to do so for several months. His paid sick leave and vacation hours are quickly running out. Pete has been an educator for 22 years and is a U.S. Marine veteran. He has been very active in his community of Kingsburg through coaching wrestling, baseball, and soccer. Above all he is a loving husband and father of 3 children. This entire process has taken a large emotional and financial toll on Pete and his family.
