Medical Funds for Mr. Patch Monroe Ross

Meet Mr. Patcher Monroe Ross!

Patch has nasopharyngeal stenosis, which is essentially the narrowing or collapsing of his nasal passage. Meaning that he has a lot of trouble breathing out of his nose! This causes Patch to have a sort of “snorting” sound when he breathes, similar to that of a pug or bulldog. Although this may sound like a non-emergent, or even cute condition, it is causing Patch great discomfort and it has begun to interfere with his daily activities i.e. eating, drinking, and playing with his friends and siblings.

This condition is rare and was very difficult and expensive to get diagnosed. It can either be caused by trauma or scarring, in this case being scarring caused by a severe upper respiratory infection Patch had around Springtime this year. Patch has been to the vet numerous times in the past few months leading up to his diagnosis, racking up quite the bill in the process!

Patch needed a CT to begin work on diagnosing what was causing his breathing issues, which limited the places available to take him significantly. Our local emergency veterinary clinic quoted us at approximately $2,500 for the CT alone! Not including further tests or potential surgery necessary to treat Patch.

We ultimately decided to take Patch to the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center. Not only were they extremely knowledgeable, but being a teaching school, they would be able to provide Patch with fantastic quality care at a fraction of the cost that we would have had to pay locally. (However still very, very expensive.)

Although they were able to finally diagnose patch with nasopharyngeal stenosis, it was not something that they had ever seen or treated before. It required participation from multiple departments of the veterinary staff to come up with a completely unique solution to Patch’s problem. Patch ended up staying nearly two full days in the ICU, requiring multiple tests, oxygen, medication, and observation. This visit totaled out to $2,995.38.

Patch is undergoing surgery today (10/14/2020) to have a stent inserted into his nasal canal in hopes to ultimately treat the root cause of his breathing problems, and allow him to be able to live, breathe, eat, and play like a normal cat again! It is estimated that this surgery and stay will total to another $2,500 as well, although we do not have the final total yet as it is a new procedure and is subject to alteration.

Wish Patch the best of luck in his recovery and don’t forget to share his story with anyone and everyone! Any help will be greatly appreciated by us and of course by Mr. Patch as well!
