Gavin's Fight Against Cancer

On March 21st, 3 year old Gavin Doubrava was diagnosed with a Wilms Tumor on his right kidney. Two days later, the cancerous kidney was removed. Scans also showed that the cancer had spread to Gavin’s lungs and subsequent tissue samples revealed that the cancer had also spread to his lymph nodes. Gavin healed quickly from the surgery and began radiation and chemotherapy one week later. However, the road to recovery is a long one.
Generally speaking, if you’re a child who is going to be diagnosed with cancer, a Wilms tumor is the cancer you want to have. Unfortunately, for Gavin, his cancer is an aggressive form. Gavin, his family and his doctors are attacking this cancer as aggressively as they can. Gavin underwent 13 days of radiation, almost double what is recommended for this type of cancer, and will undergo almost 30 weeks of chemotherapy.
As you can imagine, this has been an extremely stressful time for the Doubrava family. We are attempting to remove one of these stressors by raising money to handle any uncovered medical costs, trips to the Dana–Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, everyday living expenses, etc.
To say Gavin is a trouper is an understatement. What this young child has had to endure, and to endure it with a smile, is awe inspiring. The sacrifices Gavin’s parents and younger sister have made so they can be with Gavin throughout this ordeal is the very definition of selfless.
