Dwight Orr is married with a 2 year old daughter living in Columbia, SC. He was taking advantage of the life he was blessed to live making the most of every opportunity, and his work had him driving throughout the Southeast as welder and pipe fitter.
His talent was unquestionable.
On June of 2015, everything stopped.
On his way out of town to a job, his Suburban was sideswiped by a vehicle causing his vehicle to roll and throwing him from the car. The other car left the scene and was never located.
Dwight was in the hospital for about 60 days resulting in major surgeries leaving Dwight incapable of using his arms or legs.
Since then Dwight and his family have moved back to Estill SC to live with Rachel, Dwight’s mother and full time caretaker.
A friend of mine was assigned to his case as his personal in-home Physical Therapist once per week. Upon hearing Dwight’s story, she shared it with our house church small group. Being moved by what we heard, we decided to take action.
Now we invite you to do the same!
Two primary goals of our project:
1. Quality of Living
2. Transportation
The entire family is living at his mother’s mobile home that is in need of major repairs and modification to accommodate for Dwight’s motorized wheel chair and modified lifestyle.
Doors need to be widened, compliant ADA Wheel chair ramps need to be installed, and floors need to be reinforced beginning with the bedroom and bathroom.
Rachel, Dwight’s mother, has provided Dwight and his wife and daughter her Master Bedroom for them to use which is tight with a Hospital bed and a double bed.
The bathroom simply does not have enough room to accommodate the wheel chair comfortably, and needs an appropriate shower, a raised counter for the sink, an HDA toilet, and a hoist system for mobility.
Dwight’s ability to change scenery is obviously limited, and currently do not have a way to transport his motorized wheel chair. Dwight has a goal to go to Coligny Beach on Hilton Head, and we want to help make that happen because the more we can get support him towards independency, the greater his confidence will grow and success will follow.
Currently Dwight is in Atlanta, GA at the world class Shepherd Spine Institute. He has taken some major steps forward, and is finally able to reach out and give us a hug!
