ALONE WE ARE RARE, TOGETHER WE ARE STRONG
Olivia Jane Poole was born on March 11, 2016, a beautiful 6lbs 8oz. Shortly after Olivia was born they discovered she was building up a lot of mucus in her throat, after trying to remove it with a tube, they realized they could only put the tube down her esophagus so far before it stopped. She was then taken to Neonatal ICU in Springfield, MA. That's where she spent 26 days and where they discovered her esophagus wasn't attached to her stomach, also known as TEF (trachea esophageal fistula) which is one of the birth defects associated with VACTERL. After a very long and scary 6 hour surgery, her esophagus has been reattached and we've been reassured this was completel...y fixable And she will live a perfectly normal life.
VACTERL is a nonrandom association of birth defects that affects multiple median and para-median structures. The term VACTERL is an acronym with each letter representing the first letter of one of the more common findings seen in affected children:
(V) = (costo-) vertebral abnormalities
(A) = anal atresia
(C) = cardiac (heart) defects
(TE) = tracheal-esophageal abnormalities, including atresia, stenosis and fistula
(R) = renal (kidney) and radial abnormalities
(L) = (non-radial) limb abnormalities
(S) = single umbilical artery
Olivia is the first grandchild and never did we think this would happen but it did and all of the emotions you could imagine our family has felt. Douglas and Kate have humbled us as parents to see how they have risen to the challenges and have devoted themselves to this small but mighty little girl. Now is the time we get to work so they can be able to spend the time needed with Olivia during her surgery, recovery and the many follow up doctors appointment she will be having, as well as help with medical costs not covered by insurance.
