A Happy Mother's Day for Mother Earth

Dear Supporters of a More Sustainable U.S.A,

I am a mother of three, and a grandmother of one and I am riding my bike from Montana to Washington, D.C. in support of my SignOn.org petition "A Simple Stepping Stone to Sustainability" (http://signon.org/sign/a-simple-stepping-stone?source=s.em.mt&r_by=6992269 ). The thousands of bottles,cans, and bags lying on the roadsides are a constant reminder of the importance of this quest to beseech our government and corporate leaders to enact a national drink container deposit law and single-use bag tax.

The ten states with bottle deposit laws have demonstrated for over 30 years that financial incentives for recycling increase participation to over 80%, while also reducing litter and waste and creating thousands of jobs in the process (a national law would create 100,000 jobs as shown by the Container Recycling Institute). No new state has passed a deposit law for decades due to powerful lobbies (13 will try again this year).

My idea for a $.25 single-use bag tax, with $.05 going back to retailers to allow them to do reusable bag promotions at low cost or free, $.10 going into local community funds to be distributed via a grant process to beneficial but underfunded community building programs for youth and others in nature, the arts, mentoring, etc., and $.10 going to land and sea cleanup efforts, would reduce consumption of bags dramatically.

Requiring those who produce and consume a product to bear the burden of the consequences of that product is common sense.If we don't take action, we all pay.
