Hope is Eternal – Story of Shilpi Malik

Shilpi Malik, 40-years-old, is the mother of two young boys, 11 and 3-years-old.

In May, 2014, Shilpi was diagnosed with a very rare disease called Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma in her left lacrimal gland (left eye tear gland, just above left eye). This is malignant tumor and grows very aggressively. There are very rare cases of ACC and out of those very few patients hoave this in head and neck.

At the time of diagnosis, Shilpi's tumor had already spread throughout her head and neck area.  Shilpi's family approached many doctors in Delhi-NCR, but all of the doctors were of opinion that this particular tumor would not respond to Chemotherapy and Radiation alone will not be able to remove the tumor. Surgery was
also not an option.

On May 28th, 2014, Shilpi's family went to Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad to consult Dr. Vijay Anand P Reddy and he immediately started Chemotherapy followed by Radiation. Shilpi received 6 cycles of Chemotherapy and 32 sittings of IMRT (image guided radiotherapy) between June-November, 2014.

Shilpi felt better with the treatment and her CT and MRI scans taken in December 2014 showed marked improvement in the condition.

In January/February, 2015, the residual tumor was also removed via a minor operation done by Dr. Santosh Honavar, Center for Sight, Hyderabad.

Unfortunately, a CT Scan was done on July 16, 2015 showed re-occurrence of disease and that it had now moved toward the base of Shilpi's skull.  Between July-November, 2015, Shilpi again received 4 cycles of Chemo followed by SRT radiation (in 17 sittings).

Though an MRI done in February, 2016, a recent CT Scan done on April 21, 2016 showed recurrence of tumor once again in the skull base area.  Shilpi has already lost her vision in her left eye and her tumor has now started to grow even more aggressively and is damaging her right eye also.

After consulting with various doctors in India, Shilpi's family found very few options left for treatment. Radiation was ruled out as the head and neck area have already received the maximum dose possible.

On advise of one of Shilpi's doctors, her family approached Dr Amin Kassam, who works at Aurora St Lukes Medical Center, Milwaukee.

Dr Kassam believes the tumor can be de-bulked by surgery.  This is perhaps the only chance for her to survive. The cost of surgery is obviously going to be very high.  We are requesting the help from all possible sources to help Shilpi's family pay for her treatment in Milwaukee.

Please help Shilpi fight for her life.
