My 7 year old grandson, Skyler Ury, is in need of a service dog to help him better cope with the highs and lows of his diabetes as well as anxiety inherent with autism. Yes, Skyler is a juvenile diabetic, diagnosed at 2 1/2 years of age. He is also challenged with high functioning autism. Skyler scores in the 99th percentile on state testing, but cannot function in a mainstream classroom.
Skyler's new dog will cost our family around $5,000, with several hundred more being spent traveling to Frankfort, KY for a week of intensive training to help us learn how to continue the training of the service dog.
Skyler's new dog will be trained to sense blood sugar lows and highs as much as an hour in advance of his level dropping or raising. His dog will also help to mitigate Skylers anxiety level in an effort to minimize his explosive outbursts. Extreme highs and lows in blood sugar can cause severe damage to Skyler's body. This damage, over time, can cause Skyler to lose use of his legs or even go blind. Preserving the quality of his health is critical to Skyler's future.
Please help us to give Skyler a long future!
