Niamh's Memory Fund

Niamh - my wonderful, vibrant, energetic friend. A sister really. We met 14 years ago and have had a riot since then. Always supportive - quick to laugh and faster with a tissue - she is the go to person for a wide circle of friends and we need that circle to get bigger now guys as the stakes are mounting.

Fiercely independent and fearlessly taking on new challenges and adventures Niamh is always the one to encourage and challenge us all. A true believer of the Power of Mind over Matter and of Positive Thinking Niamh's not only achieved a lot in her life but helped so many others believe and achieve so much in theirs.

Having waited 40 years for him to come, her proudest moment is the birth 5 years ago of her treasured baby boy. He has brought so much joy and those fires which were already burning bright inside raged higher, fanned on the wind of a love so strong it took her breath away. Balancing career and motherhood brings challenges many of you will relate to - a regular Mom pushing herself to be all things to all people. Like many of you she does it with aplomb, with little fuss and a positive attitude. Goal number one : making a safe home and wonderful childhood memories for her precious son.

Marking milestones is a wonderful gift all parents look forward to and treasure. First Christmas, First Steps, First Shoes and the First Day of School. The build up to first day of school is a mixture of emotions for all parents - excitement and anxiety in equal parts as you battle to not transfer any of those emotions to your little one. Niamh experienced the same things but with one major difference - Four days before she walked him to the school yard for the first time Niamh was diagnosed with Stage 4 Esophageal Cancer.

What do you do now?............ This was one challenge that was as unexpected as it was unwanted. Being told you have 13 weeks left if you choose not to have treatment and up to one year if you do have treatment shuts down your mind as the shock waves pound you. Your world crumbles and the ground feels unsteady under your feet as the rapid rounds of consultant appointments, Stents, CT Scans, PET Scans, blood tests, chest ports, advice and information flood into your life. This was not supposed to happen this week, it was not supposed to happen ever!!. The only thing that's important, which no consultant can answer, is what will happen to my baby?.

With typical determination Niamh has faced up to two rounds of Chemo and has bought herself a better quality of life right now and some more precious time. We hope you might be in a position to help us out. Every little helps, and every little piece buys a little boy another memory to cherish for the rest of his life.
