Education and Community Health
Donation protected
My name is Fatoumata Soumaoro, but all my friends call me Fanta. I am a junior at Pioneer High School and I am interested in pursuing a career in health care (dentistry), education, and social service in developing countries. I have been given an incredible opportunity to go to Thailand this summer for 18 days. I was awarded a scholarship covering half the total cost through a program called Rustic Pathways and now I have to raise the rest. I have until May 20, 2016 to come up with $5,000 USD.
I was born in Ann Arbor but spent my childood in Guinea, Africa. I know from personal experience how important it is to have a community spirit and to be involved in what my political science teacher calls “civil society.” One of the biggest problems in Africa is that conflict and poverty have prevented civil society from being effective, and as a result this has caused so much suffering in places like Sierra Leone and Congo.
I have learned so much from my service work here in the U.S. and I want to broaden my experience internationally. I would like to travel to Thailand to create livestock enclosures that will provide a sustainable food source for local families living in Udon Thani. I will also empower teenage Thai students by sharpening their conversational English skills, as well as working to improve hygiene and sanitation at early education centers and elementary schools. This experience would be invaluable for me because after attending college (as the first in my family to do so), I would like to move to a developing country and pursue health care, education, and rural development.
*Unless I raise all the money I need to go on this trip, I will refund your donation- with gratitude for your support.
