Double Amputee World Record attempt

Donation protected
Dwayne Fernandes is an Indian born Australia with 8 world records for being a double amputee stair climber. He needs your help to get there to set new world records at 6th IRR Retro(backwards)Running World Championship  on July 14th - 17th 2016 in Essen, Germany

About Dwayne
Born with a severe bone defect which left him unable to do the things most of us take for granted, Dwayne made the courageous choice at 11 years of age to have both legs replaced with prosthetic limbs. He wanted to give himself the best chance he could to adapt to being a double amputee, and to build as normal as life as he could.

But Dwayne’s life has been far from normal. The 31 year old Sydney-based Business Analyst is now a multiple world record holder, having competed in 8 international stair climb marathons.

Dwayne came to world attention in 2008 with his first international vertical marathon, completing the 1,504 stair Sydney Tower climb in 23.49 minutes. This achievement was not only an amazing personal goal for Dwayne: his win set the first world record for amputees.

Since then, Dwayne has continued to set and achieve new goals in his sport, competing in stair climbs in Hong Kong, Singapore, Melbourne, Vietnam, Bangkok and New York. At each event, Dwayne has set a new world record for disabled athletes.

Now he set his sights on setting the 100, 200 and 400 meters world records at the 6th IRR Retro(backwards)Running World Championship.

About Retro Running and the World Championship.

Retro running , also known as backwards running, running backwards, reverse running,  or retro locomotion is the act of running in reverse, so that one travels in the direction one's back is facing rather than one's front. It is classed as a retro movement, the reverse of any normal movement.

The sport's origins can be traced back to early 20th-century athletes including boxer Gene Tunney and wrestling champions William Muldoon and Ed Schultz, who were all noted for using backwards running in their training regimes. It wasn't until the 1980s, however, that the technique grew in popularity.

The World Championships have been travelling around Europe and was last held in Italy, this year it will be in Essen Germany in July.
