Assistance for Doug and his family

On June 23'rd, 2020 Doug Henderson and his wife Tammy went for a bike ride at Chilliwack Community Forest near Unity Christian School. Doug wanted to go for one last ride while Tammy waited for him in the lower parking lot. Unbeknownst to Tammy as this was her first time out mountain biking, she was unaware how long of a trail it was and exactly how long he would be. Doug's bike hit a patch of deep mud and he was launched off his mountain bike into a ravine, shattering his c5 and c6 vertebrae and causing extensive damage to his spinal cord. Thanks to the heroic efforts of 4 young men who heard muffled cries coming from below, CSAR was contacted quickly and lead to the area Doug was laying. Finding quickly that Doug was unable to move, the boys cleared brush and debris away from Doug's face and mouth, helping him to breathe until help arrived. The boys, their mother and Doug's wife Tammy waited with him until CSAR arrived and air lifted him to Vancouver General Hospital.
Upon arrival the initial tests and MRI revealed the extent of his injury, and it was quickly determined even with surgery the outcome would be paralysis. Doug has retained movement in his arms, however at this time he is unable to move his fingers and has very little feeling in his hands.
Doug's earlier life:
Doug grew up in Greendale on a farm until he moved to a mountainside property in Columbia Valley at the age of 13. He is the second youngest sibling to 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Growing up, Doug was part of a tight knit community working in the mills, on farms and playing minor hockey. Learning to ride a bike by the age of 4 he always enjoyed the outdoors and working with his hands. A truly gifted individual when it came to fixing things and a damn hard worker.
When he was 7 years old he decided his father needed help fixing an old radio, completely dismantling it to see how it worked while starting his interest in technology. He loves hockey, mountain biking, fishing, camping, PC gaming, RC planes, RC cars and anything to do with technology. He always goes out of his way to go the extra mile to help anyone in need and has an energy that surrounds him that few others possess. Doug and Tammy have been married for 24 years they have 4 children between them ranging in age from 18 to 38 years old including a 2 year old grandson who adores him.
Hope for the future:
The road ahead for the family will be a long and difficult one, with many new challenges on the horizon. With the new information about Doug's injury, it is now clear that he will need a power chair, and a heavily modified home for any sense of normality. The family will have to move as the home they now live in will not be adequate due to it having two long flights of stairs. The most important thing at this time is to bring him home where ever that may be. We have been informed he will be in the hospital for a minimum of 6 months or longer. He will be transferred to multiple different sections of the hospital during his recovery.
