Marcos is my
wonderful son, who was recently diagnosed with cerebral palsy and secondary
microcephaly. He was born at 30 weeks gestation. It was a twin pregnancy, full
of complications that led to the death of his brother, Mateo, 12 hours after
birth. Before Marcos was discharged from the NICU, they told me that he had
PVL; in other words, some areas of his brain were damaged at some point during
the pregnancy or after birth. What this all means for him is that at almost 2
years old, he cannot sit, crawl or stand on his own.
As a single mother, with no help from the father or his relatives, it's almost impossible for me and my family to afford all the diverse equipment that Marcos needs for everything from bathing, to sitting and transportation. We live in Puerto Rico, and there's not a lot of assistance from the government for these purposes.
Marcos has grown a lot and it's now very difficult for me to bathe him in his old baby bath, so we need to buy a new shower chair, and build a shower that is sufficiently big to accommodate it. He will also need AFOs and a wheelchair, as well as other equipment.
I was able to work until January of 2013, but I have since resigned from my job because taking care of Marcos is my priority; every time I had to miss a medical appointment or a therapy session because of my demanding job I felt that I was failing as a mother. On top of that, my mom, who took care of my baby for the last two years, is sick and can no longer handle him on her own.
The chair he needs is the Rifton Blue Wave Bathing Chair, which sells for around $1,100 with the accessories.
The construction of a new, wheelchair accessible bathroom, is around $5,000, without the cost of labor.
Wheelchair models for his age and conditions range from $1,500 to $2,000.
The Rifton Dynamic Stander, recommended by his physical therapist to help him learn to stand and walk, costs around $3,000 with the accessories.
I still don't have a quote for his AFOs, but from what I understand, they are also very expensive, over $1,000 at least.
Marcos is the light of my life, and I want him to be happy and to have all the opportunities to develop to his fullest potential. We will be eternally grateful for any help you may provide.
