Creating ART to raise University Fee

My name is Maliha Abidi. I am an artist and I am a Medical Neuroscience student at the University of Sussex. Science is a field that has inspired me since I was little. I am holding this fundraiser for my fee so that I can complete my education and graduate as a Neuroscientist.

I am passionate about women empowerment, education and as an artist, I paint and draw on similar themes. As an author, I write about stories of women such as Helen Taussig, the brilliant American Cardiologist or Mary Seacole, the amazing British nurse and businesswoman.  I have done many arts and writing-related projects (which you can read about further in the text below) surrounding inspirational women in science and along the way, I fell further in love with it that I decided to be a woman in Science myself.   I need your support to achieve my goals.

The Medical Neuroscience program at the University of Sussex is one of the best in the country and it is a leading research University. I am grateful to be admitted to it and I aim to work hard to graduate with honours. I need your support in making sure I get to continue my course and complete my education.

After I graduate from University:

As a neuroscientist, I aim to continue making a difference by starting an organisation which helps women and children from underprivileged backgrounds with their health and mental health in Pakistan. The goal will be to combine my knowledge as a neuroscientist and an artist to have a greater impact.

(Mental Health is an issue that people all around the world face but in many cultures, there is a ton of stigma around it and people resist talking about it)

Alongside serving at the organisation, I will also be conducting research in the field of neuroscience for the advancement of science. I am truly passionate about the field of Neuroscience and am dedicated to studying it to become a neuroscientist. I aim to become a valuable part of society through my education in science as I am currently contributing through my work in art.

Current projects:

I am trying to bring change as an artist and author. I have worked with organisations such as the United Nations Women, Peace Corp and Adobe on various issues surrounding women and children. Some of the topics include domestic violence, lack of education, poverty, climate change and mental health. One of my recent projects related to women empowerment and Pakistan has been my book “Pakistan for Women: Stories of women who have achieved something extraordinary.” The book consisted of 50 portraits and 50 stories of women from astrophysicists to firefighters to mountaineers. It was the first book of its kind in Pakistan showcasing stories of women in science, in sports, in education, in activism from all over Pakistan. Not just represent their stories within Pakistan but to non-Pakistanis as well. The book received a ton of love and support and I was happy to see that stories reached people in more than 40 countries. I am committed to women empowerment, whether that is through art or science or a combination of both.

Photo of the book and some portraits:
I am trying to raise £67000 or $84000 which will cover my tuition fee and book fee for the full degree. There are some other additional fees, but I aim to work part-time on the weekends to fulfil those expenses.

As I mentioned initially that I am an artist. In exchange for your support, I would like to create art for you.

How you can help:

I have some funds secured which I was able to earn from my various earning streams as an artist, author and a travel writer. I have also secured a small scholarship. The amount I am trying to raise here is solely for my university tuition fee and the rest of the expenses I plan on paying by working a part-time job while being a full-time student and from some funds, I have saved up as mentioned above.

Following are some rewards I have set up through which you can contribute to the university fund and support my future:

For £250 ($300) : A A3 size portrait for you. The portrait will include 1 person in the image. For additional people in the portrait, it will be an additional £150

For £500 ($550) :  A 12 inches x 16 inches Acrylic Painting (This can be a portrait or calligraphy or landscape painting.)

For £600 ($700) : A 12 inches by 16 inches Oil Painting (This can be a portrait or calligraphy or landscape painting.)

For £750 ($850) : A 16 inches x 20 inches Acrylic Painting. (This can be a portrait or calligraphy or landscape painting. Anything of your choice.)

For £850 ($1000) : A 16 inches x 20 inches Oil Painting. (This can be a portrait or calligraphy or landscape painting. Anything of your choice.)

You can contribute through any amount and when you contribute a similar amount as the rewards above, I will email you to further discuss the art piece I will create for you.

On my website, , you can find some art products and also my book, “Pakistan for Women: Stories of women who have achieved something extraordinary” can be found.

I appreciate every bit of support. Even if that is simply sharing the fundraiser.
