“Our boats might be old and worn but they are all we have, and to us...they are priceless.” Loveland Rowing - Loveland, Colorado
Loveland Rowing (“LVR”) is a small recreational club and rows on Boyd Lake at Boyd Lake State Park. On June 8th, 2020 a mighty storm hit the park dumping a ton of rain and hail in addition to winds of up to 70 miles per hour. Even though our boats were secured to a HEAVY metal rack, it was no match for the storm. The wind pushed our eight person sweep, our quad along with three other shells, and the metal rack, up and over to the OTHER side. The boats crash landed on our two doubles and one member's personal single. Our eight is a goner. The quad needs some serious repair and the doubles are also damaged. The rack itself lies in a twisted mangled heap.
Our club started in 2016 with a couple of collegiate rowers and eight eager novices that didn’t know a gunnel from a foot stretcher. Loveland, Colorado is not a university town and there are no other rowing clubs. We had little money when we first formed so our small collection of boats were either donated or came to us at a small cost. Our twenty four year old sweep is now severely damaged and not worth fixing. Two old doubles and the quad needed repairs before the wind got a hold of them. Our ancient Peinert single works just fine although a bit heavy. Due to the age and used condition of our boats the insurance payout will be rather minimal, and we'll need to cover the deductible, of course.
Because our boats are racked at a state park we are not allowed to pour a pad, drill into the ground or have any type of shelter, temporary or otherwise. But when the ranger saw the aftermath of the storm, he agreed to allow us to dig a hole, fill it with cement and create a much more secure system for holding a (replacement) rack in place.
We are not asking for new boats. We just need a little help replacing what we had so our small but hearty crew can continue to row and maybe even grow.
