2020 Olympic Games Fundraiser

My name is Jason Ho-Shue.  I am 20 years old and a member of the Canadian Badminton National Team.  I also train out of E Badminton Club in Markham, Ontario.

10 years of commitment to the sport, only comes down to one chance.  One more year…  A dream that many athletes have, to compete in the Olympic Games, is shared with me and those who are supporting me through this journey.  This year I will be competing around the world in order to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan!

At a young age, I would always follow my family to their recreational badminton games.  It wasn’t very long until I began to pick up the racquet and started to enjoy the sport with my friends and family.  My father was my first coach and I would not be where I am without the constant love and support from my family.

In 2011, my father suddenly passed away due to heart failure while playing badminton.   I contemplated walking away from the sport for good.  How could something we both shared and love, be the reason he isn’t here with us anymore?  With the help of family, coaches, and friends, I was able to realize that badminton is something very special that is shared between me and my father.  He would not want me to stop playing.  I used this as motivation going into the next couple tournaments shortly after my father’s passing.  I achieved my goals in winning gold in all three events, in both the provincial and national championships!  My father is still my inspiration to this day!

My father was our only source of income at the time; a few months after he passed away, my mom started working full time in order to support me and my little sister.   In Canada, badminton receives very little funding compared to the more well-known sports such as basketball, baseball, hockey, etc.  When we travel, all costs are our own responsibility.  We are all individually self-funded and with so much travelling for competitions, the costs can build up.  During my 2nd year of University, I studied full time, worked full-time in a hospital doing IT, coached on the weekends and did my training every evening.   I was doing everything I could to help pay for my badminton expenses and lessen the burden for my Mom.

The Olympic qualification period has just begun; my goal is to qualify two events for the Olympic Games (Singles and Doubles).   This is going to be the toughest and most expensive year for me.

My dream to represent Canada at the biggest stage in the world is coming very near!   I believe that I can make it!   Thank you so much to all my friends and families for all your support in advance!  In the future, I will surely give back to the community to help others as you have helped me today.
