2019 World Championships for Visible Spectrum

We are Visible Spectrum, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics team #11872. We are a 3rd year school based team out of Lakeville North High School. Our teams has seven members, two boys and five girls, each a different color of the rainbow spectrum! FIRST is an international robotics program that encourages kids to encompass STEM, learn public communications skills, engineering skills, and creative problem solving skills. For more information, please visit firstinspire.org.

Our level of competition contains three tournament stages, Regional Qualifiers, State, and Worlds. At our Regional tournament we won 2nd Inspire which goes to the team who most embodies FIRST culture and is a role model FIRST team. This advanced us to State.  There are 199 FTC teams in MN this year, and we were super excited to be in the top 48 that will be qualified for State! At State we won the Think Award, which advanced us to Worlds! This judged award is given to the team that best reflects the journey the team took as they experienced the engineering design process during the build season. The Engineering section of the notebook is the key reference for judges to help identify the most deserving team. We are one of 11 Minnesota FTC teams going to the World Championship in Detriot this April. Not only will our division of FIRST be in Detroit that very same weekend the other three divisions will compete in their World Championship.

Every year, we get a different challenge to solve by building a robot, without any instruction.  At competitions, different components of the challenge are worth different points, and the alliance (composed of two teams) that scores the most points, wins that round. For example, this past year, setting a block into a grid in a certain pattern earns our alliance 30 points. The competition involves an “autonomous” (where we can only run pre-programmed programs) and “driver controlled” (where we can use a joystick to control the robot). Besides learning engineering principles, FIRST also teaches us to think outside the box, critical thinking skills, public speaking skills, time management, teamwork and to never give up.

We greatly appreciate any donations towards our team! All sponsors will be thanked and donations over $100 will get their name on our website and will be added to the mailing list of our monthly news letter. Thank you for your time and consideration!
