2019 GHI Guatemala Mission Trip

We are a group of first and second year medical students at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and members of an organization called Global Health Initiative. For the past three years, our group of medical students, residents, physicians and pharmacists has successfully provided critical medical services and screenings to several communities in rural Guatemala with limited access to healthcare.
With the help of our families, friends, and communities, our last trip in March 2018 was an incredible success. In partnership with DOCARE International, we were able to treat 681 patients over the course of four days and prescribed approximately 600 doses of antibiotics, 3000 diabetes medications, 40,000 vitamins, and toothbrushes, tubes of toothpaste, bars of soap, packets of lotion, and packets of sunscreen. Additionally, we provided educational materials and classes on good hygiene, how to make water safer to drink, and healthy eating to promote the growth of sustainable health practices in the communities we visited.
This March we will be returning to the same villages to build on our successes from last year and continue providing continuity of care for the people who have come to hold a special place in all of our hearts. We are excited for the opportunity to try out some new efforts to maximize the impact of our trip this year, such as utilizing portable ultrasound technology for rapid, accurate screenings and expanding our team to include pharmacy students.

All of the money we hope to raise will be used for purchasing the medications and supplies we will be bringing with us. Our work will benefit Guatemalans in great need, but the experience, knowledge and skills that we develop from our time serving these communities will impact our future patients and practices as physicians and healthcare professionals.
