2018 Lyon K-8 Washington DC Trip

Across the USA each year, eighth grade students eagerly anticipate the culmination of their middle school years with a trip to Washington DC. This educational opportunity ties in perfectly with their 8th grade Civics course and helps them to experience our country's government and historical landmarks, truly making their learning real.
Unfortunately, due to the cost of the trip, this awesome opportunity is not accessible for all students, and we need your help to make a trip possible for our 8th graders this year.
The Mary Lyon K-8 School is a fully inclusive urban public school located in Boston, MA. Our mission is to provide a rigorous academic program that is able to meet the needs of all of our students, including one third of them who have social and emotional disabilities. More than half of our students live in poverty. We are a truly diverse community of learners, for whom respect, empathy and acceptance are the things that make our school shine. Despite many challenges and complex learning needs, our school is one of the highest performing schools in Boston.
This year we are hoping to bring our 8th graders to experience Washington, DC. This has required considerable research to find a trip provider that would be open to working with all students, and not exclude those with special needs. We also needed to find a way to bring the right number of chaperones to help support our students so that all who want to attend have what they need to be successful. Due to the small size of our 8th grade class and the need to bring additional chaperones to support our students, we are hoping to raise the funds to help lower the $985 per student cost of this trip, so that all of our students who want to experience Washington, DC are able to attend. The bus alone will cost $5700 .
