NORTHEAST HIGH WINS LEMELSON-MIT GRANT FOR SECOND TIME IN SCHOOL'S HISTORY

Northeast High School is a magnet school in Oakland Park, Florida with specialized programs in Latin and Collegiate Studies, Industrial Biotechnology, and Alternative Energy.

The school is 1 of 15 schools nationwide to receive the prestigious Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam Grant! Northeast's InvenTeam is using the grant to create a mosquito breeding disruptor using engineering, programming, and design concepts. The grant will cover costs for building and testing the prototype.

“We are creating an autonomous and adaptable device that would break the surface tension of stagnant water to prevent mosquitoes from breeding. It would be powered by solar energy during the day and battery at night. The purpose is to prevent mosquitoes from laying eggs in water sources and then spreading mosquito vectored illnesses like West Nile, Malaria, Dengue fever, and many others in densely populated tropical environments.”

STUDENTS NEED $20,000 TO PRESENT PROTOTYPE AT MIT

Every year, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) hosts EurekaFest in Cambridge, Massachusetts for young inventors. EurekaFest is a festival presented by the Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams program and a multi-day celebration designed to empower a legacy of inventors through activities that inspire youth, honor role models, and encourage creativity and problem solving. This year's EurekaFest will be from June 19th through the 23rd. As grant recipients, the NEHS InvenTeam has been invited to present their working prototype at the festival.

EurekaFest offers Northeast's InvenTeam members invaluable experiences that will not only foster their inventive skills, but reinforce their critical learnings, build confidence, and their professional development. These young students are future scientists, change makers, and inventors. Please join us in helping these deserving students have an opportunity of a lifetime!

WHAT WILL THE COSTS COVER?

Travel costs, lodging, accommodations, and food for 14 students and 4 chaperones.

What is the Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam?

Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams™ are comprised of high school students, educators, and mentors that receive up to $10,000 to invent technological solutions to real-world problems of their own choosing.

How are schools chosen?

A prestigious panel of judges composed of educators, researchers, staff, and alumni from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), as well as representatives from the industry and former Lemelson MIT Award winners, assembled and selected Northeast as one of this year’s InvenTeam grantees.
