DWL's 2018 Autism Awareness Day

My sister, Madison, is diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Isodicentric syndrome (Dup 15q). Dup 15q syndrome is one of the most diagnosable forms of autism. Autism, a spectrum disorder characterized by a deficit in social skills, problematic behaviors, and limited communication, has brought many hardships to Madison’s life. Seizures, surgeries, and special diets are constant complications for Madison, however, this does not hinder her passion to grow and her curiosity to learn. Madison, like every child who struggles with autism, is entitled to and deserves an education where they can achieve their aspirations.

Madison currently attends The EPIC School in Paramus, New Jersey. EPIC strives to establish and run a school that will develop each student to their fullest potential. EPIC utilizes the most current research-based techniques in the science of Applied Behavior Analysis. These techniques are teaching Madison to feed herself, assimilate into her community, and learn to communicate. The students at EPIC are conquering their greatest obstacles. Autistic children that could never talk are now, not just having conversations, but reading and writing. Autistic young adults are working in businesses, stores, and restaurants. With the help of EPIC, parents are realizing what seemed to be the impossible is now possible. EPIC is essential to giving individuals with autism an education that will help them learn and grow.

I am incredibly passionate about supporting The EPIC School. Not only are the students deserving, but I have experienced first hand the EPIC staff’s hard work, love, and dedication to making sure that my sister and all the students can live their lives to their greatest potential.

For the 3rd year in a row, my team, Dickinson Women’s Lacrosse will play on March 30th to raise awareness for autism. Please join me in supporting this amazing school by donating. Thank you for your generosity!
