HIV/AIDS Healing Weekends are inclusive events for all people living with HIV/AIDS as well as their partners, friends, families and caregivers. From 1990 to 2008 the Healing Weekends were held twice a year. In 2009 the Healing Weekends were reduced to once a year due to a lack of funding, and as the only HIV/AIDS Healing Weekend in Ohio still in operation, it is now in jeopardy of being eliminated all together. The Red Candle was established as an organization to help raise awareness and money to maintain the existence of the HIV/AIDS Healing Weekends.
The Red Candle is a coalition of people dedicated to the education, empowerment and emotional support of persons both infected and affected by HIV/AIDS so that they may make informed choices and decisions regarding their healthcare and personal well being.
The Red Candle provides much needed information and emotional support through medical forums, emotional support groups and Healing Weekends. All services are offered in a non-judgmental and safe environment with compassion and understanding.
In Ohio, there are over 20,000 people living with HIV or AIDS. Despite medical advances and the promising new drug treatment options that are extending the lives of many persons impacted by HIV/AIDS, the AIDS epidemic is not over.
New issues and challenges have arisen for people living with HIV/AIDS. Issues of drug treatment failure (when the medication stops working), joining a clinical trial, disclosing an HIV diagnosis, HIV employment and housing discrimination, and coping with side effects are just some of the challenges facing persons living with HIV/AIDS today. In addition, under-served and difficult to reach populations such as women, minorities and persons living in alcohol and addiction recovery institutions pose unique challenges in dealing with HIV/AIDS.
In a time when the HIV epidemic has surpassed its 30th year and new HIV infections continue to occur on a daily basis, now more than ever we must continue the struggle against HIV/AIDS.
The Healing Weekend is an educational series of workshops that deal with living effectively with HIV/AIDS. The weekend is designed for individuals whom are newly infected, long term survivors, family, friends, significant others and HIV healthcare providers. Topics include but are not limited to: HIV Drug Treatment Options, Insurance and Public Benefits, Stress Management, Alternative and Complementary Therapies, Nutrition, Medication Adherence, Recreational Drug Use, Clinical Trials, Relationships, Goal Setting, Managing Side Effects and HIV Disclosure.
The Healing Weekend is conducted by volunteers, medical doctors, nurses, benefits counselors, attorneys, nutritionists, researchers, peer advocates and peer support group facilitators. The weekend is usually conducted over the course of a Friday evening, and Saturday & Sunday, in a safe, non-judgmental environment.
