A bit of history:
The Leland House went through a year (June 2016— 2017) where it was faced with what co-ops across the spectrum have to deal with at one time or another, rarely are they forced to deal with them all at the same time. A succinct summary is that the house went through a period where trust broke down among its membership and miscommunication and lack of cooperation and compromise spread like a bad flu virus. This led to a drastic decrease in membership. Month after month the houses expenses far outweighed its income. If it weren't for the Hoyne House, the Leland House would be in critical condition. They have come to our assistance in an incredible way assisting us in paying the 2nd installment of our 2017 real estate taxes and our 2018 property insurance premium.

Today's House:

Six new members have joined Tom and Afrika (the stubborn ones who refused to leave) and have become stewards of the house and the co-op's mission as quick as any in Stone Soup's 20-year storied history. Beginning in August, for the first time in over 6 months, the houses monthly income exceeded its operating expenses. We are also planning to add two new members over the next four to six weeks. The list of folk who have already filled out applications is impressive. The community began preparing and sharing meals on a regular basis again recently. The kitchen cupboards (on both floors) are full!

The Need:
In order for us to be in a position to meet our 2018 liabilities we need to do the following things:
• The first is raising our rents. Each of us has committed to add at least $50 to our monthly membership charges, adding $500.00 a month ($6,000 for 2018) to our household income.
• Raise $14,000 to replenish our empty capital expenditure fund. This is the fund we use to cover any non-budgeted capital expenditures (e.g. furnace, plumbing, etc.)
• Raise $6,000 to be earmarked for any legal fees incurred from any ongoing litigation tied to the eviction case (the first in our history). The second purpose for these funds would be for us to begin to repay the aforementioned gift from the Hoyne House.

Your donation today will help ensure Stone Soup Leland house carry out its mission of providing an affordable and healthy living environment for people committed to social justice work.
