At the age of 8 years old, Cassandra Lehti was diagnosed with kidney cancer. After years of treatments, prescriptions and struggling through it all, Cassandra was able to beat cancer in her teen years with the support of her twin sister Madison, brother Bryton and parents Monica and Ernie. As a teenager, she was able to regain her color and sparkle travelling the road into adulthood.
Through the treatments as a kid, Cassandra always had the help of her sister Madison to help her catch up on the schooling she missed since she was away so often for doctor visits and treatments. Her brother Bryton was able to visit Camp retreats with his sisters on the occasion which he says "It was a way of getting part of our childhood back that was missed". Parents Monica and Ernie have done such an amazing job raising their kids to be intelligent and respectful adults now, but you can imagine what twenty years of medical visits and treatments does to parents and the family as a whole. The ordeal they have gone through does not define them, but their resilience to it all does show how strong their sense of family is.
Unfortunately, in recent years, Cassandra has had to fight Cancer again multiple times. The interruption in life has pulled her down and out away from her goals and schooling as she tries to become an RN (Registered Nurse). Currently, Cassandra is cancer-free, but the past years of taking the drugs that go along with her treatments have not been kind to her liver.
Cassandra is now on the list for a liver transplant and could be called at any point to travel to Edmonton in an instant for the surgery. What will go along with that surgery is a required stay in Edmonton, away from the family home in Calgary. The 3-month stay will be for daily assessments to assure that her new liver will settle into her body without complications.
The required stay in Edmonton will require the cost of an apartment, new prescriptions and much travel back and forth for everyone supporting Cassandra through this life-saving surgery. All insurance companies decline coverage of existing conditions, so the costs have weighed heavily on the Lehti family for the past 20 years both financially, physically and emotionally.
