Please Help Betty and Thourn's Dog (Bagel)

Last night (1/31/13) was the first night my wife and I cried ourselves to sleep because our dog Bagel was hit and ran over by a car.  It all happened so fast.  A solicitor rang the doorbell while I was in the bathroom, my wife was getting the collar to put on Bagel, and our friend opened the door for the solicitor.  As my friend opened the door Bagel took off.  I heard my wife yelling for Bagel and so I figured Bagel snuck out again somehow.  Within seconds of Bagel running out, the freak accident happened.  Bagel was hit and ran over according to the eyewitness (my little brother).  I ran out of the house and all I saw was Bagel hobbling on three legs.  Immediately, tears came pouring from my eyes because I saw that his two front legs were injured and both bleeding.  One leg was definitely broken and the other was damaged severely but he was able to hobble on it.  It felt so unreal and time stood still for a long moment.  My brother and my friend went to get information from the driver while my wife and I were both tending to Bagel.  My wife ran into the house to search online for the nearest animal care center as I stayed with Bagel and held him.  I couldn't stop crying as we drove from our house to the animal hospital because I saw how damaged his broken leg looked.  His right front leg looked limp and Bagel had no motor function.  The worst part was watching both legs bleed from the deep lacerations as I held him still in the back seat during the car ride.   While I was holding him, he bled onto my left pant leg and a towel.  He lost so much blood because my pant leg was partially soaked with blood, and I can feel it on my skin. We checked him in and waited for about 40 minutes for the vet to tend to Bagel, then they called us in to see him.  Both my wife and I burst into tears when we saw him with the bandages, and his tail wasn't wagging.  We walked over to him, knelt down to open his cage and helped him hobble out on three legs.  Instantly, we rained tears as we pet him.  He was in so much pain and was still bleeding through the bandages (see photo).

Now you know the story, and here is where we need your help.  Bagel's front right leg needed surgery because his ulna and radius are broken.  Surgery took place on Saturday morning (2/2/13).  The vet said that everything looks promising and that after recovery, there will be no long term damage nor lost of function.  The estimated total cost will be about $7000 total (see next two images).

Some of you know that we are both educators and this will definitely make summer difficult to get through.  We normally save up enough to get through the summer and take our anniversary trip in late July from money we make during summer school.  But, this summer looks grim because of our unexpected medical bill.

[Edit]

Thank you all for your love and support for Bagel through this difficult time. The out pouring of donations in the short amount of time is truly amazing. Thourn and I are blessed to have such supportive family and friends. Here's a little more about Bagel for those who have not met him. Bagel is a rescue dog. I rescued him in 2005 from the Pasadena Humane Society. He is about 10 years old. Bagel is a Beagle and Doberman mix. He is adorable and very smart (opens the back door to go outside). He loves his treats and will do just about anything you ask. Bagel has an aversion to water and does his best to avoid baths. He has increased his tolerance in the past year and will now walk into the shower by himself instead of laying down on the floor waiting to be pushed in. He loves to play with his bouncy balls and anxiously awaits his walks around the neighborhood. Bagel loves any attention you can spare him and truly enjoys a good belly rub. He has mastered the art of guilt-trip by strategically placing his cute little face on your knee and imploring you with his irresistible look. Although he weighs nearly 40 pounds, he still thinks he is a puppy and will try to sit on your lap. Thank you again for your love and support for Bagel. We will continue to post updates as we find out more. Please check back for his post-op updates and photos.
