Land for families in IDP Camp

This is Tania Zogheib and I am currently volunteering in Rift Valley Kenya in Vumilia IDP camp. The people who live here are displaced due to post election violence that occured in 2007/2008 due to allegations of cheating and very strong tribal tension. They had been promised by the gov. to recieve land and some financial help in order to restart their lives again, but this never happened. So now, five years later there are still 40 families living in this camp and they will soon be evicted. The land they are currently on is owned by a local person and he is demanding they all leave by March 2013. Kenya is also set to have another election that same month. It could be a peaceful one, but it still brings much fear to those at the camp.

Any of the money raised will be used to buy them land.

Some families have begun to raise money themselves for land, while others have too many financial obligations to properly save, as many people here only recieve about $1.20 a day. An acre of land can cost anywhere from $1,500-1,800, and eight families can live there.

This will not solve all of their problems, but it can be a new beggining for them. So, if you can spare anything...and I mean ANYTHING it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
