This has been a rough year for my father, Corry White, following the diagnosis of Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. He's been through multiple surgeries, hospital stays, CT scans, MRIs, chemo, radiation and excruciating pain from a build up of spinal fluid on the brain. Many ups and downs. Tears and laughter. Moments of anger, sadness, grief and anxiety. It hasn't been easy for him. Amongst all the physical, mental and emotional pain, the hardest part was accepting the fact he could no longer return to work. Anyone who knows my father knows he loves his job in the swimming pool industry and his work family is just as close as his own family. So for him to come to the realization that he had to resign almost broke him. Misty has been working hard to help carry the burden of all the bills and care for my father. I can't thank her enough. His former employer Quality Pool Supply has graciously organized a benefit dinner being held on January 6th at the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Hilliard,Ohio from 430 to 730 in the Ganyard Building. I ask that all of you join me in our efforts to be #CorryStrong. ❤ Brief history from the words of my father: 2007 I was having very mild seizures, never to where I didn’t know what was going on around me. I would have them during sales conversations with my customers, while driving, or while mowing grass. I told my family doctor about them, and he sent be to a Neurologist to start a whole bunch of tests. One scan exposed a golf ball size mass on my right frontal lobe. I went in the hospital on Monday 10/29/07 and had surgery on 10/31/07. It was determined I had a grade 3 Anaplastic Astrocytoma. The surgery was successful, they got most of the tumor that was only on the right side. I followed up with 42 radiation treatments at Riverside. 42 consecutive weekdays off on weekends and holidays. When that was done I did Chemo at home via Temazolomide (Temodar) I think I did that for 10 weeks. I had virtually no side effects from the chemo. I went to all my appointments and scans for 5 years. And I worked the whole time. At that time I decided for myself that I’m done, I want to just live my life so I stopped going to my checkups. I needed time to get my bills paid off. So about 11-1/2 years later I start having dizzy spells, distorted hearing due to head pressure. Tingling in my feet. I took myself to the ER in Marysville, Ohio. I feared I was having a stroke. If you want attention in a hospital tell them you may be having a stroke. I also told them I suspect a return of my brain cancer. A CT scan confirmed that and I was transported to Riverside in Columbus on 7/6/19. I had surgery on 7/11/19 to remove that bad boy. That’s when it was determined that I did indeed have GBM Glioblastoma multiform. Median life prognosis 9-18 months. I got home from surgery and I had problems with csf building up at my incision area. The ventricles were clogged with cancer cells and not allowing it to flow. I checked back in the the hospital and they cut my head open at the same spot again and tried to do a better job sealing the bone (skull) this failed again. My doc was considering putting in a shunt to drain the fluid to my abdomen. While I was still in the hospital I developed a DVT clot in my left leg. Then they install a IVC filter to catch a clot if needed. I went home a few days later. My blood clot got much worse. I couldn’t walk. I woke up on Saturday morning with so much pain I called our local emergency squad. I talked them in to taking me to Riverside instead of Marysville or Urbana. I needed more than a band aid and a Dum Dum sucker. I had a blood clot removal surgery. I was awake for that and it hurt like a mother. Back home then fluid buildup still a big problem, severe headaches, nausea, fever, and constant weird dreams and sounds. The music is still playing in my head. Last but not least, I go back in for a VP Shunt surgery. That plumbing goes from my forehead over to my ear, down my neck down through my chest cavity and drains in my abdomen. I got so much relief from that surgery. I’m feeling very good right now. Trying to grasp the reality that I had to quit my job. It’s taking some getting use to. I had a CT scan this Tuesday and I have an MRI on Monday. Hopefully they will be stable. I have been very humbled by all the prayers and well wishes and the benefit dinner took me by complete surprise. All a person can hope is that they leave a legacy with friends and family that get left behind when it’s our time to go.
