Vicky Victoria's Fight

After nearly two years (Dec, 21th 2017) of a successful Kidney transplant that I received from my wife, we were blessed to have also endured the hardships that came afterwards with the support of family and friends. This time God has set forth one of the most vulnerable challenges any parents can face. Vicky Victoria fights Leukemia which she was diagnosed on a day before Thanksgiving, November 27, 2019. Our youngest daughter, four year old, had been sick for a few weeks. First visit, doctors treated her for a stomach bug that lasted about a week. She would vomit and lost her appetite. We noticed that she would not talk as much, and trust me, she is a detailed chatterbox. Then a week later she was treat for a throat infection. She would cough and she would hold a fever for a few consecutive days. She missed many days from preschool and when we sent her to school during her better days we would receive a call moments later to pick her up because she was not feeling well. We decided it was best to keep her home until we saw improvements. Vicky lost her radiant glow, would sleep a lot more, Vicky would want to be carried and simply held. At this time Vicky would use single words to communicate. The improvement we seeked never came. Finally my wife took Vicky to her doctor one last time. At the doctor's our Vicky was seen and the doctor determined that she had an ear infection and without a second thought doubled the antibiotics and sent Vicky and my wife home. My wife was upset and asked the doctor if she could please check her hemoglobin. The doctor picked up her records and suggested that our Vicky was fine because her blood work seemed good in June. My wife was concerned and pointed out how pale our Vicky was and her complete lack of energy. The doctor had a second thought and a blood test was done. The results came back and the doctor was now accompanied by her supervisor. They both informed my wife that the platelet count was dangerously low at only a count of four (4) out of a range of a few hundred. My wife was informed that Vicky needed a blood transfusion and that the clinic was going to call an ambulance to transport Vicky to the nearest ER. My wife was confused, angry, scared and a whole bunch of other emotions that her motherly instincts had processed throughout this doctor's visit. My wife refused and told the clinic she would drive Vicky to the ER. The clinic gave my wife some concent forms to sign before letting her take our Vicky. After arriving at Loma Linda University, Vicky was seen by a doctor in the ER that confirmed there was no ear infection and that Vicky needed additional test to find out what the cause for abnormal results in red and white blood cells was. We were admitted shortly after to the Children's Hospital. The staffing was very welcoming and had a genuine concern for our daughter. We couldn't shake the feeling that this was going to be a long stay. We were notified that our Vicky had Leukemia but the acknowledgement wouldn't fit our reality. It took a while to accept that this was actually happening. Now, we begin a long and very emotional process that hurts as we pray for our once excited and full of life little chatterbox to recover.
