Help Save Amber's Eyes

Donation protected

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to read this. My friend Amber Hughes is a humble, sweet, loving  wife and mother of two. She is also an incredible artist and jewelry designer. A few years ago, Amber began to loose her eyesight in her left due to a rare eye condition, so rare that her doctor can't even specifically name what it is or why it is happening. Since then she has received monthly shots in her eye to keep more scar tissue from forming and further damaging her eyesight. She is now classified as legally blind in her left eye. On Christmas Eve 2012, she awoke and saw waves through her right eye for the first time. She was devastated, the condition is no longer isolated to just one eye.  As of now, she is in dire need to see  a specialist at the Mayo Clinic. If she does not get to a specialist soon, there is a chance she may loose all of her eyesight. Mayo Clinic requires $5000 in cash for her to get an appointment. The shots that keep scar tissue from forming and prolong her sight are $2000 a month, plus a $500 office visit charge. Add travel costs on top of that and things really begin to add up. At a minimum we would like to raise the $5000 to get her to the Mayo Clinic. Any excess of that would be a huge help with treatments and travel costs.  Here is an explanation in her own words:

"I am not guaranteed to lose all my vision... My specialist just does not know when the scar tissue forms, or why it is forming, or how bad my vision will get before it stops, or what kind of medicine will stop it. He is treating me with Avastin which is an injection in the eye monthly. He has only seen this condition a few other times, and I need a team of specialists in a more populated area to see if they can figure out what( "disease" ~not sure what it is called) I have.
It is very possible a team of retina specialists will recommend the exact same treatment.... though we hope that is not the case. I am really hopeful that through diet changes, supplements and, conventional medicine and natural medicine that I can begin to heal & regain my sight. I have faith that I can do this...it just feels like so much right now..."

Like I said, Amber is so humble and asking for monetary help is not easy for her. But we can't let her risk loosing her vision. All donations go directly to Amber to cover her medical and travel costs. Anything will help every single dollar adds up! If you can't donate just sharing this page with others would help greatly. Again thank you for taking the time to read her story and thank you in advanced if you are able to help!

1/12/13 update:
Amber now has an appointment with the University of Washington Eye Institute on January 23rd. This is a more affordable option than the Mayo Clinic. In fact, they require an $800 cash payment with the "understanding the bill of the day could exceed $1200." Thanks to the generosity of all who donated thus far, her first appointment is pretty much covered! Thank you all.
