A Well for Earthquake Village in Lombok
Donation protected
In August 2018, two earthquakes of 6.4 and 6.7 magnitudes struck the small Indonesian island of Lombok and devastated many towns and villages. Lombok is a still undeveloped island near Bali. One devasted village is Mangsit. It is located a little north of the tourist resort town of Senggigi Beach.
I have visited this village a number of times over the years and was struck by the devastation. Housing is very slowly being repaired, however, water to families is a real problem and must be hand lifted into heavy plastic buckets from an old well and carried long distances on the head by women villagers and children to their homes each time they need any water.
Another well is really needed. Cost depends on the depth to the groundwater, but raising a thousand dollars would be the deal-breaker for this poor village family. When the earthquakes happened, my wife and I were in Bali. We walked Legian and Kuta with a bucket, eventually collecting $900.00 from tourists and locals that was used for buying and getting tents donated from Australia for the villagers so that those without homes could get through the tropical wet season.
We have also made substantial donations and would like to appeal to others to help solve this real and ongoing village water problem. The well will be permanent, hygienic and properly constructed. It is a promise that all monies raised will be used entirely for the well construction. The well can be completed as soon as money is found. Thank you ahead, for this long-lasting project.
