1st Carioca Capoeira Columbus Batiz

We are the Carioca Capoeira group of Columbus, OH.  Capoeira is a 500 year old Afro-Brazilian Martial Art. Traditionally capoeira is practiced as a “jogo” (game) between two opponents, always accompanied by the music of the berimbau, a musical instrument of african origins that is one of the hallmarks of capoeira. In the capoeira game the two capoeristas show their acrobatic and fighting skills as well as their ability to deceive and trick each other.

Carioca Capoeira started its activity in Columbus 2 years ago, and since then we've worked to spread our art and develop the capoeira community in central Ohio.

We are organizing our first ever Batizado, which is a ceremony where new students who have been training consistently receive their first rank (cord) in Capoeira. Older students who are ready will also receive a new cord at this time, signifying a higher rank and responsibility to the group. This ceremony is an important step for Capoeira practitioners as they get to see their hard work throughout the year come to fruition and recognition.

In order for our Batizado to be the best, we need the support of our community. We are bringing world renown capoeira artists from all over the country
to Columbus . To do this we need to raise $2000 to cover airplane tickets, gymnasium rentals and other expenses.

The batizado will be held on Saturday, August 26th at the Lazelle Woods Recreation Center
8140 Sancus Blvd
Columbus, OH
