Cancer isn't in the budget

My name is Leslea Goodwyn and my husband is Dave Bjornsen.  We live in a small town 30 miles north east of Seattle.  We both have good, full time jobs and my husband has two teen age boys. We have been married for three and a half years.  Dave and I have worked hard the last few years building our credit in hopes to buy a house. We didn't see this one coming.What can I say...cancer isn't in the budget. 


Dave was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in May and had the surgery in June. The doctor said it was the worst case he had ever seen, 11 of the 16 lymph nodes taken out had cancer.  He listened to the doctors and took care of himself.  He had radiation in October, and again, did what the doctors told him. So far so good. He has another scan in Jan and hopefully there will no be any more cancer through out his neck.


We pay $225 a month for insurance, and our deductible in $2,000. The bills keep coming in, $2,000, $2,500, $700, $160, $1,100...and the Everett Clinic is sitting on another $2,000 bill waiting to see what insurance will cover.  

We tried to set up payment plans. We are trying to keep up. The large bills want $200 a month.  We have been sending what we can to 7 different hospitals and clinics. Even with small, regular payments, two have been sent to collections because we weren't paying enough.  

That is when I came across an article in the December issue of TIME magazine, Crowdfunding a Cure. I had never heard of this.  I have been sitting on this because it goes against our nature to ask old friends and strangers for help. Hard enough to ask family. But we are out of ideas. So here we are.
