“This past Sunday morning we received the news any parent would dread, after sitting in the ER all day Saturday with Mackenzie; doctors told us that Mackenzie has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. With the confirmed diagnosis, Mack’s journey will be long (around 3 years) and at least 1 confirmed month of Mack and I living in the hospital receiving chemo and other cancer-fighting drugs. All the while Trey starts kindergarten at a new school.
I have worries, like any mother, for both of my children, my daughter who fights so hard daily to show the world how strong, smart and amazing she is, now has to face challenges in her own tiny body to overcome. My fear for my son is that he will feel neglected during this time since so much focus is on his little sister who is fighting for her life. Mack has the best big brother who loves her without limits (he even dressed up as Spider-Man for her in the hospital). I hope he knows that his parents love him and we are so proud of him every day. No parent should know cancer in their children; this is not how we imagine our lives when we have children. We do all we can to keep our them happy and healthy but some things are out of our control... the first time we experienced that was when we were told Mack would have Down syndrome and the 2nd is now.
This amazing little girl has shown all that have met and know her that she is truly one of a kind. She’s easy to fall in love with over and over, even when she’s not hitting! She’s our sour patch kid!
We ask for your love, support, thoughts, and prayers. I’m hoping to chronicle parts of our journey to recovery since that’s where we are headed.
