5,000 Reusable Pads for At Risk Canadian Girls

Our Mission:

Period Poverty is a silent, yet prevalent reality in Canada. Approximately 1 in 3 young women in Canada are experiencing or have experienced period poverty firsthand.

In an attempt to reduce this statistic, HAGO has been organizing and executing community outreach projects throughout Southern Ontario, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers caused by the stigma surrounding menstruation. We believe that voices and access are the two factors that will help us to End Period Poverty, especially in a developed country like Canada.

Help A Girl Out (HAGO) is a registered not for profit organization based currently in Brampton, ON. We are an anti-poverty organization that aims to eliminate period poverty and menstrual shame and to help build female self-esteem.

What is the project about?

The 5,000 reusables project is a new initiative that aims to sew reusable menstrual pads for Canadians at risk of Period Poverty. Selected among only seven other black and indigenous-led organizations the project received funding under Toronto Pearson International Airport’s Propeller Project.

The goal is to provide 1,000 individuals in some of the most period poverty-prone areas/situations with a cycle supply of reusable pads that will create menstrual equity for years. Our goal is to support young girls from low-income families, refugees, homeless or sheltered women/girls,
eliminating period poverty for up to 5 years.

Reusables are a very convenient and effective solution to fight Period poverty because they eliminate the need for years! We also find that we tend to get a lot of thin/light absorbance pads in our donation drives so sewing reusables will enable us to support women with heavy flows.

How can you help?

We're actively seeking volunteers to help us sew 5,000 reusable menstrual pads in an effort to support menstruators across the country.

We’re also collecting donations as we'd like the care packages to include hygiene products as well. If you'd like to donate item(s) to these care packages you may reach out to us, via our website HelpAGirlOut.org, or email us at [email redacted], everything helps

Disposable pads and tampons contribute to our environmental footprint by adding to landfills and plastic pollution. Reusable pads and cups are a more concrete solution and are able to inhibit period poverty for years!
